Discover the Advantages
of Percutaneous AV Fistula for Hemodialysis
If you're exploring options for dialysis access, a percutaneous arteriovenous fistula (pAVF) may provide an effective, minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgical fistula creation.
At Advanced Access Medical Care, we are proud to be among the first practices in the tri-state area to offer endovascular fistula creation using the Ellipsys® Vascular Access System. Our team has extensive experience in dialysis access care, having performed more than 250 Ellipsys pAVF procedures, helping patients avoid surgery and achieve reliable hemodialysis
The Benefits of PAVF for Hemodialysis
Unlike traditional surgical fistulas, which require an incision and operating room procedure, pAVF is created through a small needle puncture using ultrasound guidance. The procedure is performed in our outpatient vascular access center, allowing most patients to return home the same day.
Benefits of pAVF
No surgical incision and minimal scarring
No hospital admission or general anesthesia
Outpatient procedure performed in a comfortable setting
Faster recovery and quicker return to normal activities
Excellent functional outcomes with preservation of future access options
Reduced postoperative discomfort
A more natural fistula configuration, often associated with high patient satisfaction
No Surgical Incision
Avoid a Hospital Stay
Ready to Use in Shorter Time
Understanding the PAVF Process
During the pAVF procedure, a tiny catheter device guided by ultrasound serves to establish vascular access for hemodialysis. The entire procedure takes approximately 30 minutes. During your follow-up visit, you’ll receive an ultrasound examination of the fistula. If the fistula is matured, we will mark on your arm where the dialysis team should place your needles for hemodialysis.
Patients with Stage 4 or Stage 5 chronic kidney disease who are approaching the need for dialysis may be candidates for pAVF. Not every patient is anatomically suitable, but a simple ultrasound evaluation can determine whether this innovative option is right for you.
Our team works closely with nephrologists, dialysis centers, and patients to develop an individualized access plan focused on creating the right access, at the right time, with the best possible long-term outcomes.
If you or a loved one are considering dialysis access options, contact Advanced Access Medical Care to learn whether a percutaneous AV fistula is appropriate. Early evaluation allows us to maximize access choices and avoid prolonged catheter dependence.
